Il nostro passato

Unfortunately, it is difficult to explore this in depth due to the scarcity of documents, but from the 14th century onwards we have archival sources that allow us to reconstruct the history of this religious building. The Diocesan Historical Archive of Cortona holds the ‘pastoral visits’ (the visits that bishops were required to make annually to all the churches in the diocese, to carry out both doctrinal and material inspections), and our Ecclesia Sancti Silvestri is mentioned as early as the oldest ‘pastoral visit’ record from 1337. In fact, San Silvestro was fortunate not to have been abandoned; rather, it was transformed from a Benedictine monastery into a parish church with an oratory, where the parish festival was held every year on 31 December, the feast day of St Silvestro. In 1515, Cardinal Silvio Passerini (Cortona, 1469–1529), in order to increase the revenues of the Chapter he presided over, had the Ecclesia Sancti Silvestri incorporated into the Chapter’s assets. Thus began the decline of San Silvestro: deprived of its parish (which had been transferred to the nearby church of S. Marco in Villa) and its congregation, it was gradually neglected. In 1983, the building was listed among the 50 Tuscan farmhouses worthy of mention for their architectural distinctiveness.

In 2002 Monastero San Silvestro was completely restored and refurbished, whilst preserving the traces of its history.

The green heart of the Farmhouse

In front of the historic building lies the monastery grounds and the swimming pool with its sun terrace, set amongst the greenery.

What people say about us

  • Cleanliness, ambiance, staff. A rich and very tasty breakfast, the eyes just couldn't get enough. All praise, keep it up. It's a shame we only planned one day.

  • Peaceful and great value!

This property is great value. It is peaceful and the pool area provides a lovely relief from the heat of the European summer. The rooms are older, however it is a historical property. The breakfast is outstanding and a great start of the day. We really enjoyed our stay.

  • Peaceful, closely located to medieval villages, spacious romantic rooms, Being like at home.

Arriving at the Monastero San Silvestro, is like arriving home. The upper floor apartment is outstanding in space with amazing view on the Tuscany Hills. The beautiful garden as a very well kept and offers many shaded areas under the trees. The large pool is very enjoyable after a long day of visiting the surrounding villages. Breakfast is delicious with large choices. We were greeted by Amata and her husband as well as Christian, who made our stay so enjoyable. Located only 3 km and a 10 minute drive from Cortana, we’re able to enjoy some delicious dinners in this medieval village. If you’re in this area, this is probably your best stop to enjoy a peaceful environment away from the crowd.

  • A wonderful stay in a magical monastery! Not to be missed if you're in Cortona!

Our whole experience at Monastero San Silvestro was better than we could ever have imagined! We were in touch with Christian on the day of our arrival to let him know when we would arrive and the check-in process was very quick and smooth... The cherry on top was the breakfast, served between 08:00 and 10:00, a buffet style breakfast is laid out with cereals, pastries, cheese and meats, plus fruit and yoghurt - everything was delicious! We really cannot recommend Monastero San Silvestro highly enough! If you're going to be in the Cortona area, you'll regret not staying here!
